What are Hives?
Hives, the common term for urticaria, are essentially when your blood vessels start to ‘leak’. Sound strange? It’s not as scary as it sounds. When your body has an allergic or hypersensitive reaction to something, histamine is released. When histamine is released, it causes your blood vessels to leak a little bit, causing what we know as hives.
These raised bumps are typically itchy and red, can be either small or large and may appear in significant clusters on various areas of the skin. In some cases, large areas of the skin can be affected. In other cases, such as hives caused by a skin disturbance (including itching or a wasp sting), the hives may only appear in one localized area.
Symptoms of Hives Allergic Reaction
Hives symptoms include swelling, itching and redness. Though these are the most common symptoms, a burning or stinging sensation may also be present. In rare cases, large, firm, painful welts and swelling may be present. If this is the case, your child may be affected with angiodema, which produces symptoms similar to hives yet affects the skin much deeper. If this is the case, they should be checked out by a doctor.
Hives in Children and Toddlers
Hives allergic reaction in children can cause extreme discomfort, because the itchiness of the hives themselves will cause the child to want to itch them constantly. Constant itching and scratching of the hives may cause even more hives to develop, which would be counterproductive. If your child has hives, it’s important to speak with them and let them know that they shouldn’t be scratching at their hives. If necessary, they may need to wear gloves and be distracted by a book, game or television show while you help treat their symptoms.
Hives in toddlers can be particularly shocking, but it’s no cause for concern. Try to keep a notebook full of what you feed your child on a daily basis, since any allergy can be identified and eliminated easily due to the simplicity of a toddler’s diet and hives allergic reaction in toddlers is no different.
Other things to consider are whether or not they may have been stung or bitten by an insect, or spent excessive amounts of time in the sun, heat or cold. If your house has a pet, your furry little friend may even be the culprit!
Are They Contagious?
Noticing that your child has an outbreak of hives may be shocking, but you have nothing to worry about. In the case of acute hives – which are hives that last for less than 6 weeks – the cause is likely an allergic reaction or skin sensitivity that will go away within a few hours. The hives themselves are not contagious, so you don’t need to worry about keeping your little one home from school or forbidding them to hang out with friends. And when treating them, there’s no need to wear gloves or be cautious about your own health.
Treatment-What Natural Remedies are Available?
Although most cases of hives go away on their own, the symptoms can be irritating if not taken care of. The are a handful of over the counter medications to choose from when attempting to alleviate the symptoms of hives, and the majority of these medications are antihistamines – traditional allergy medications.
A particularly good natural remedy to use, especially when treating children for hives, is OxyHives. It is a homeopathic treatment for hives that contains FDA approved ingredients, so you can be sure that you’re only putting natural ingredients into your child’s body.

A Program To Eradicate and Stop Hives Naturally:
No Drugs To Harm Your Child
In order to prevent another outbreak in the future, it can be helpful to locate the cause of the outbreak. Did your child have an outbreak of hives 30 minutes after eating fish?
Try removing whatever particular food came before the outbreak and see if another outbreak occurs. Whether it be a cat, a type of food or a medication, hives caused by allergens can be avoided.
When to see a doctor for Hives or Allergic Reaction Hives
If your child’s hives symptoms persist for more than a few days or they have any extreme symptoms of angioedema, it’s important that a doctor sees them as soon as possible so that he or she can recommend adequate treatment. Chronic urticaria or chronic hives should be evaluated by an allergist or immunologist to determine proper hives treatment.
