There’s a lot in this world to be anxious about, but when anxiety goes from being an occasional bothersome thing to something that keeps you from doing your work and enjoying your life, some medication or herbal treatment might be in order.
There are many different herbs that can provide relief to people suffering from anxiety, and they are much more gentle and less habit-forming than the conventional prescription medications prescribed for anxiety.
Herbs for Anxiety and Depression.
Kava, also sold as kava kava, is one of the most well-known herbal remedies for anxiety. It is a sedative that seems to calm people down without disrupting their alertness. Kava has been used in studies to treat moderate to severe anxiety, including social anxiety and agoraphobia.
Chemicals in kava activate the same receptors that are affected by drugs like Valium, but without the potential for addiction, depression and memory problems. Another compound in kava reduces tension in the skeletal muscles, which are often affected by anxiety and stress.
Kava usually comes in 100 milligram tablets or as a tincture. Three pills or droppers can be taken daily with meals. Kava shouldn’t be taken for more than four to six months at a time, as long-term high exposure to the herb can cause liver damage and other problems. Don’t take it with alcohol or when pregnant or nursing. Those with Parkinson’s Disease should not take kava, as it can make twitching more pronounced.
Valerian is a tranquilizer that is helpful for calming restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, headaches and nervous stomach. It can also lower blood pressure, which many people under a lot of stress need.
Valerian is commonly found in over-the-counter sleep aids and has been found to help people fall asleep faster, have better quality sleep and wake up without a drug “hangover.” It is particularly helpful for those with chronic sleep problems, and has been found to be as effective as Valium, without the side effects, when combined with St. John’s Wort, a common herb used for treatment of mild depression.
People who use valerian for several months and quit abruptly may experience withdrawal symptoms. If you’re already on sedatives or antidepressant drugs, consult a doctor before taking valerian. It can be taken in capsule form several times a day or consumed as a tea before bed. Valerian oil can also be used in a warm bath before bed.
Chamomile is another herb that is used to treat anxiety. Its especially helpful for children because it is gentle. Inhaling the essential oil of chamomile reduces the body’s production of a stress hormone, and can make prescription anti-anxiety drugs more effective. Use a few drops of chamomile on a cold compress or drink it as tea. Don’t use chamomile if you are on blood thinners.
