A Brief Overview

Tinnitus is a Latin word that means ‘ringing’. It is a condition rather than a disease that causes perception of sound within a person’s ear when there is actually no presence of it. This can be perceived in one ear, but there are also some cases wherein it occurs in both ears. The condition can also be felt and or observed in the head. The condition can remain stable ,escalate or come and go.

Tinnitus Symptoms

Most patients describe it as ringing in the ear noises, but there are also a number of people who experience it in the form of high-pitched whining, humming, clicking, beeping, hissing, whistling, or sizzling sounds. In addition, there have also been some patients who described the condition they are suffering from as a ‘whooshing’ sound.

Types of Tinnitus

There are basically two types of tinnitus.

The first one is referred to as subjective tinnitus, which is the most commonly occurring form of this condition. When it develops, the patient is the only one who perceives the sound. It may be a result of ear problems affecting any part of the ear, from outside to the inside. Problems related to the auditory (hearing) nerves or the auditory pathways (the part of the brain responsible for interpreting nerve signals into sound) can also cause this condition.

Subjective tinnitus can be caused by many different factors. Hearing loss and otologic-related problems, such as conductive hearing loss from external ear infection, loud music, loud noise, middle ear effusion and acoustic shock are some of these. Sensorineural hearing loss can also cause this type of tinnitus, which can be brought about by acoustic neuroma ( this is a benign tumour that grows in the canal connecting the brain with the inner ear) , mercury poisoning, Meniere’s disease, and ototoxic medications ( damage to the ear by toxic medications such as antibiotics).

The second type is known as objective tinnitus. In this case, the doctor will also be able to hear the sound that the patient does when conducting an examination. It is much rarer than subjective tinnitus. It is often caused by problems affecting the blood vessels or the inner bone. Muscle contractions may also cause this second type of tinnitus.

It is only rarely that objective tinnitus may be an indication of a potentially life-threatening health condition, including carotid artery dissection or carotid artery aneurysm. This type of tinnitus may also be a symptom of vasculitis, specifically the giant cell arteritis. A number of people who are suffering from idiopathic intracranial hypertension may also experience this particular kind of tinnitus as a symptom.

The Psychological Side Effects

A lot of tinnitus patients have reported that they experience a number of psychological side effects. These have resulted in a drastic, destructive and negative impact on their day-to-day lives. Teflon implants may also be used in order to shield the patient’s cochlea, which is the cavity within a person’s inner ear that detects impulses travelling through the auditory nerves. Using neuro-stimulators have also shown positive results. Lastly, in patients who have earwax plug-related problems, extensive clearing of the ear canal is often done.
